“Homeland”
Older generations of Korean Chinese (those whose ancestors were originally from the Southern part of the Korean Peninsula) still call South Korea their “homeland”. For second and third generation Korean Chinese, “homeland” meant the land that their parents and grandparents were born and grew up. For younger Korean Chinese, “homeland” means China, the land where they were born in and grew up in.
Thus, the phrase “homeland” among the Korean Chinese today tends to be changeable ranging from the situation they are in, as well as the political context, social situation, time, and generation. Their identity is also contested and changed depending on the situation, time, and generation.
